The Rise, Impact and Influence of TikTok

Originating from China with the title ‘Douyin’, and globally known as TikTok, the unique short-form video platform has taken the world by storm. Launched in September 2016 by ByteDance, the app’s prime demographic was initially the Gen Z and curious millennials. The app’s popularity surged overnight, promoting a light-hearted, creative, and engaging environment where users could construct short videos with a choice of background music, a variety of filters, and the challenge of ‘going viral’.

TikTok’s prominence owes much to its algorithm. Unlike other social media platforms that generally focus on networking and relationship-building, TikTok’s algorithm puts emphasis on content. Its algorithm analyses user interactions, video detail, and device settings to customize and provide users with content they may enjoy- from comedy sketches, fashion, food, artful dances, to educational videos, there is something for everyone on this diverse platform.

The short-video app became a cultural phenomenon during the COVID-19 lockdown. With more time on their hands and limited entertainment options, people turned towards the platform to keep themselves entertained. TikTok gave users a unique opportunity to harness their creativity and mould it into something fun and engaging. No wonder, it recorded two billion downloads on Apple App Store and Google Play Store, as of April 2020.

Moreover, TikTok has made a significant impact on the music industry. With its ability to renew interest in old hits or propel new tracks to mainstream success – termed as the ‘ TikTok Views effect’ – the app has become an essential marketing tool. Area 21’s ‘La La La’ and Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’ are examples of songs that achieved record-breaking success from their popularity on TikTok.

TikTok also provides a platform for users to voice their social and political opinions, thereby proving its influence beyond entertainment. Amid a vast array of fun-filled dance challenges and comedy sketches, serious issues like the Black Lives Matter movement and climate change gained international attention on the platform.

Despite the intense scrutiny and numerous bans it has received worldwide – due to concerns over data protection and censorship allegations, TikTok’s popularity has remained unfazed. Its convenience and potential for virality continue to draw people in. With its rapid expansion into new markets and the introduction of new features, we can expect TikTok’s influence to grow even more prominent in the future.

In conclusion, TikTok has revolutionized the way we perceive social media. It’s more than just an entertainment platform; it’s a tool for self-expression, a catalyst for change, and a testament to the weight of creativity and individuality in the digital age.
